Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 04-30 Thursday means bike race day. Unfortunately, I feel pretty crummy, so no race for me. I still wanted to work on getting more of the riders this time, with a bit less focus on my own team. I was trying lots of motion blur (panning with camera). I thought this one was kind of neat because there are so many things happening. There are guys going left, guys going right, and guys headed straight on. I was panning slighty right, which put the guys in the middle in focus. Lots more of these to follow when I feel better, and have a few more hours to process them all. Small crop in PS today. Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 08-08 "Extra Close Up!" I took my nephew birding this morning. Unfortunately, there weren't too many birds for him to see, but we managed a heron, a couple bald eagles, a cooper's hawk, a family of osprey and lots of "little birds" as he put it (swallows, sparrows, blackbirds). The best line of the day was "Can we find a herd of those eagles?". We found ripe blackberries at the osprey spot and he was in heaven! This was a great week for photography. I've shot interesting subjects all week (hydros, blue angels, soccer game, super cute kids!), and the new camera/lens setup is amazing. This was shot with the new 14-24 f/2.8. It's amazing how wide this thing is, and how close I needed to be to pull this shot off. I was making him laugh by moving backward and forward for his 'extra close up'. Silly smile and goldfish were the outcome. I made this one selectively colored because I thought it further emphasized Nolan's expression. I did this by selecting everything around him and turning it black & white. I did nothing with the curvature however. This is exactly as shot, with a black & white backdrop.
Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 04-20 Today my wife and I went for a walk in Lincoln Park here in lovely West Seattle. I know there's a resident owl, so I brought along the big lens. My shoulders hurt from lugging it around from dawn til dusk yesterday in search of birds all over the state. Anyway; no owl, but an eagle who was enjoying the sun. This is a pretty big crop, but it stayed pretty clear. He was at the top of a tall evergreen, and in no hurry to leave.
Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 03-31 Tuesday is turning out to be the toughest for photos now that bike racing season has begun. I take off for work before there's sufficient light, come home at lunch to free my dogs, then head off for the races in the evening; returning well after dark. All of the races happen at the same time, so no chance of any decent race shots. Anyway, I got 6th out of 50 tonight, which is pretty ok since I felt horrible most of the race, only to rally at the end. This is the front chainring of my racing bike. Macro is fun! Photoshopped the levels a bit because, even using the flash f/10 doesn't provide quite enough light for proper exposure.
Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 04-07 Today I was all set to race, but when I began to warm up, my seat made a popping sound. Not good. I checked it out, and rode a bit further until it did it again. Very not good. I got off, wiggled it a bit, and the entire thing popped right off the seat post. So, needless to say, no racing for me. On the other hand, because the race is a short circuit with three groups running at once, I was able to try some different things. This one is a long exposure of one of my teammates (Dustin) taking a drink. These are really tough to get right, and I racked up 20-30 pictures and this was the only one that came out with the effect I was shooting for. I PS'd up some contrast and lowered the saturation. Update: I’m a bit of an aperature priority junkie. I find that it’s the easiest way to get my pictures to come out how I plan. In this case, shutter priority would’ve been fine. For aperature priority, I pointed my camera in the vicinity of the picture, and used the metering in the viewfinder to find a shutter speed I was looking for by changing the aperature. I had to turn off ISO auto, but didn’t remember to drop my ISO back to 200 or 100.
Jeff Lynch Photography > 2009 04-26 Today I headed up to the Skagit with my wife and her friend from work. What an awesome day to be out taking pictures. Beautiful sun and great company were the story of the day. The tulips have finally arrived! We spent a good portion of the day looking for birds, and the rest here with the tulips. Lots of eagles, a few harriers, and lots of ducks on the other sides of fields was our luck for birding. I couldn't help myself, but put up a couple of the eagle pictures as well... I played with the levels a little here to get the most out of the sky. Not much required when it's this beautiful out though! This was actually a blessing in disguise, as I was able to sleep in a bit longer, and needed it! Anyway, after work, I played with the dogs for a bit. This shot is of my parents' dog Molly. Ours wont chase balls, so it's tough to get any action shots of them. I spruced it up in PS by turning the whole thing B&W using a new layer, then erasing the portion of the layer that was over the ball. I really like this effect. I've used it for some of the kid pictures, and have seen some really cool wedding photos by others that have utilized this effect.
Jeff Lynch Photography > 2010 01-11 A shot of the stairwell at my job. This is looking straight down through 3 stories of stairs. Nothing in post, although I debated changing the wb just a bit. I didn't like the way it made the walls look, so I left it a bit yellow.

This was actually a blessing in disguise, as I was able to sleep in a bit longer, and needed it! Anyway, after work, I played with the dogs for a bit. This shot is of my parents' dog Molly. Ours wont chase balls, so it's tough to get any action shots of them.
